Our mission, established in 2005, is to promote a thriving film and video community in West Michigan. Now referred to by many as media production, we fulfill the mission by providing education, networking, and professional credentials to signify your commitment, as well as ours, to high production standards.
As one of the founding members of the West Michigan Film Video Alliance, I’m pleased and proud that our organization has influenced the appreciation for film and media production in our state. We spent all of 2004 organizing with the input from dozens of local producers, selected our first official Board of Directors by a show of hands in a packed auditorium at the Wealthy Theatre, and kicked off our first major event in 2005: a Membership Party at Celebration! Cinema North in the Wave Room. We received our non-profit status that same year and now in 2017, as we enter our 13th year, we return to our origins to extend a helping hand to the next generation of media makers as we all face the mercurial future of media in America.
The WMFVA is the only non-profit group formed by members of the production community to serve the interests of the production community HERE in West Michigan through volunteer leadership. There is nothing else like us in the state or in most other states.
In 2016, we provided a cutting edge seminar on commercial drone operations with a Unmanned Aircraft Systems instructor from Traverse City’s Northwestern Michigan College, one of the top 10 schools in the nation with a UAV program; brought in Amy Heckerling, writer/director of “Clueless” and other teen comedies for special screening and seminar on independent filmmaking and major studio distribution as part of our Visiting Film Artist Series; created the innovative partnership with Celebration Cinema to introduce the Spotlight on WMFVA veteran members, Dave Lowing and Stuart Poltrock; hosted several networking events with local production houses – DVS, CK & Co. Media Production and Fulvew Productions – to highlight their services and promote community growth.
Since our beginning, the WMFVA has established a proven track record of events and actions that promote our industry in our region. I’ve been extremely pleased to work with over 70 people who have been members of the WMFVA Board of Directors over the years. My last term as Chair completed with the election of a new board this past January, led by new president, A.E. Griffin. It is my sincere hope you’ll grant him and the board the patience and support you’ve given me in the role over the years.
I wish you all the very best and will always be a proud member of this community, I will always support the industry here, and I will always be interested to see how the Alliance grows in the future.
Happiest wishes and here’s to continued success for us all!
